Hala is an engaging short film about a Muslim-American teenage girl who comes to terms with growing up and exploring her sexuality. Often in cinema, I see lazy stereotypes when it comes to the portrayal of Muslims and more specifically Muslim-Americans on screen, however, Hala was able to create an interesting, multi-dimensional character that audiences can empathise with. With a great plot, dialogue and cinematography, this short is a solid all-rounder. As it’s a proof-of-concept for a possible feature, I am hopeful that something more will come of this film.
